Migrating Web Applications to Cloud

Business Challenge:

To be able to offer more value-added services and assure high system availability to its global customers, this leading ISP wanted to upgrade its IT landscape which consisted of applications using Angular (Apache web server) and Spring (Tomcat server) boot framework and relying on Microsoft Active Directory services for authentication and Microsoft SQL Server for storage. The ISP wanted a more scalable and high performing infrastructure, while also avoiding security threats and frequent maintenance.

Move to Azure Minimizes Downtime and Cost

Solution:

MSRcosmos conducted a detailed study to understand the legacy system architecture and deployment set-up, which set the stage for re-engineering the system architecture to be compatible with the new Azure cloud infrastructure. The team began by transitioning Web Applications from on-premises to Azure App Services via PaaS, which offered a more advanced and secure platform. They then completed a database migration from on-premises to Azure SQL Database, an intelligent, scalable, relational database service built for the cloud. For access rights, Active directory authentication was replaced with ACS 2.0 Passive federation with ADFS, and Azure VPN is used to provide interaction between cloud applications and on-premises databases. The application uses Azure SQL Server database for storing application data.

Business Benefits:

  • Greater performance with a more flexible infrastructure
  • Reduced maintenance (thus downtime) and zero data loss
  • Reduction in costs

Utilizing the Microsoft Azure environment, MSRcosmos enabled a leading ISP provider to introduce new value-added services and improve its customer experience with less downtime and at a lower cost.
